Floor loading can maximize carton count
Without pallet height and deck-edge clearance, more cartons may fit. Each carton must be handled, however, so loading and unloading take longer and packaging strength matters more.
- Check whether cartons are uniform and strong enough.
- Confirm labor and handling time at both ends.
- Verify that the consignee accepts floor-loaded arrivals.
Pallets improve operational flow
Pallet units move, count and store quickly. The trade-off is pallet volume and weight, no-overhang rules and stack limits that reduce carton capacity.
Decide with total cost
Ocean freight alone can make floor loading look cheaper. Add origin and destination labor, waiting time, damage, repacking, pallet purchase and recovery.
- Cartons per pallet and safe stack height
- Forklift and dock availability
- Quarantine and ISPM 15 requirements
- Compression, shifting and damage risk
