Palletized or floor-loaded: which plan is better?

Floor loading may increase carton count, but handling time and damage exposure can rise. Pallets consume space while making forklift handling, counting and storage much easier.

Comparison workflow

  1. Confirm carton and pallet dimensions, height and weight.
  2. Calculate cartons per pallet and total pallets.
  3. Compare floor-loaded and palletized carton capacity.
  4. Include labor, unloading time, damage risk and warehouse rules in the decision.

Floor loading can maximize carton count

Without pallet height and deck-edge clearance, more cartons may fit. Each carton must be handled, however, so loading and unloading take longer and packaging strength matters more.

  • Check whether cartons are uniform and strong enough.
  • Confirm labor and handling time at both ends.
  • Verify that the consignee accepts floor-loaded arrivals.

Pallets improve operational flow

Pallet units move, count and store quickly. The trade-off is pallet volume and weight, no-overhang rules and stack limits that reduce carton capacity.

Decide with total cost

Ocean freight alone can make floor loading look cheaper. Add origin and destination labor, waiting time, damage, repacking, pallet purchase and recovery.

  • Cartons per pallet and safe stack height
  • Forklift and dock availability
  • Quarantine and ISPM 15 requirements
  • Compression, shifting and damage risk

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a pallet consume?expand_more

It depends on the standard and build. Include deck area, pallet height and clearance needed to avoid overhang.

Can cartons overhang the pallet slightly?expand_more

Overhang raises compression and impact risk and may be rejected by a warehouse. Avoid it unless the receiving operation explicitly approves it.

How should mixed SKUs be planned?expand_more

Calculate each SKU separately, then review layer patterns, total height, weight distribution and center of gravity for the mixed pallet.

Calculate cartons per pallet

Enter pallet and carton dimensions plus height and weight limits to compare orientations and required pallets.
